Joy and Nomi took the plunge and signed up for their first 10km running race ever in May 2010 in Singapore at the Sundown Race event...Then they trained for a half marathon in the fall of 2010, Joy's in Canada and Nomi's in Malaysia...Then, they finished their second-ever half marathon in Singapore May 2011 at the Sundown Race event, but this time they ran together!

Then their sporting paths diverged: Nomi went on to run marathons while Joy learned how to ride a bike. This blog charts their progress from 2010 to 2012.

A Friday the 13th Ride...

Joy here...Friday the 13th is considered unlucky in western societies.  While most people posit this as a 20th century superstition with its roots in an early 20th century novel (Friday, the Thirteenth by Thomas Lawson) in which a broker chooses Friday the 13th as his day to bring down Wall Street, but in his 1982 book The Knights Templar, another author, Stephen Howarth has argued that the superstition goes all the way back to Friday, the 13th of October, 1307 when the Knights Templar were arrested en masse and falsely charged with heresy and various other kinds of immorality.

But more importantly, this superstition that things go wrong on Friday the 13th offered the thematic undergirding of one of the US's most successful movie franchises.  The first Friday the 13th movie came out in 1980, and there have been something like 12 other movies since then!  These movies are characterized by suspense and violence as characters are stalked, frightened, and, of course, ultimately killed.

So in the spirit of all that is creepy and superstitious, my entry about today's ride hints at something, but doesn't ever truly give it away. Can you figure out my secret, like Jason's identity?

I was finally able to return to the Gatineau Park for a ride on my road bike rather than my cross bike that I've been using so far this season.  The Man and I rode up Pink Lake, down the other side, over the hills and the bumpy road and into Chelsea where we sat down and ate treats at the bakery before grovelling back up the same hill that we skied both up and down less than 8 weeks ago!

But we survived our Friday the 13th ride...and were all ready and geared up for Saturday morning's ride.

Have you figured out what's my little secret?

Over and out,
Joy
